What is Asthma?

Asthma is a medical condition that causes periods of decreased airflow in the lungs due to constriction of the air passages or due to inflammation. These bouts tend to come and go. Asthma affects millions in the US, from children to adults.

Asthma Symptoms

Asthma symptoms range from mild to very acute, and may include some or all of the following:

  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tightness of the chest
  • Coughing, often during exercise, while laughing, or at night

Evaluating  Your  Condition

When you come to any of our three offices, we will perform a physical exam and record your history. We will then run a breathing test to determine how your lungs are performing. We may also perform allergy or blood tests in an effort to fully analyze your asthma condition.

Treating Your Asthma

The severity of your asthma will help determine the appropriate treatment. In most cases this includes taking a medication, and avoiding the things that trigger your condition. Both quick relief medications and controller medications may be prescribed. The former help relieve the symptoms of an asthma attack, and the latter are designed to treat inflammation of the lungs as part of a long-term asthma control strategy.

Studies indicate that asthma sufferers who manage their condition via an allergist are more successful in controlling their asthma. They tend to have a lower total cost of treatment, and they experience fewer emergency room and doctor visits.
